Are GHMC Elections Planned Around Sankranthi To Avoid Seemandhra Voters!

The Telangana government’s decision to hold crucial GHMC elections in January 2016 turned controversial.

The government on Monday submitted an affidavit to High Court stating that it will conclude GHMC elections process by January 31, 2016. This would mean elections would be held in mid January, when Sankranthi festival falls.

We all know that Sankranthi is a big festival for Seemandhra people and more than half of Hyderabad will become vacant for nearly two weeks as Seemandhra people along with their families rush to their native places to celebrate Sankranthi.

Over 60 per cent voters in GHMC limits hail from Seemandhra region and TRS party feels that they would not vote for TRS even if it promises moon to them.

The ruling party opines that Seemandhra voters would ensure win for TDP-BJP combine in GHMC polls and to minimize their impact at least to some extent, it would be better to hold elections during Sankranthi.

The TRS leaders feel that Seemandhra voters may skip GHMC polls but can’t skip Sankranthi celebrations in their native places considering the significance being given to Sankranthi every year.

Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy already took up the issue with Election Commission over holding GHMC elections during Sankranthi saying that TRS was deliberately holding elections during this period with a fear of defeat in polls if all Seemandhra voters vote against TRS.
