AP In For Drinking Water Shortage?

AP In For Drinking Water Shortage?

Everything that Kiran Kumar Reddy predicted prior to bifurcation is coming true. Water wars, electricity problems and other issues dominate the headlines daily in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. But AP might face its first severe test this coming summer, especially in the Krishna Delta.

The Krishna Delta comprises four districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and West Godavari. Leave aside irrigation; there are more than 1000 drinking water tanks in these districts that are heavily dependent on the release of water from the right canal of Nagarjuna Sagar. If these tanks are not filled up before the onset of summer, the region could witness an acute drinking water crisis.

However, Telangana has stopped the release of water from the right canal since December 24 despite repeated pleas by the AP government.

The Krishna River Management Board has expressed its inability to resolve the issue and asked the Center to intervene.

Unless the Center resolves the water issue quickly, AP might be in for a very tough period in summer. But with the people of Telangana and AP not on the best of terms, it is highly difficult for the Center to come up with a solution acceptable to both parties.
