A Sign Of Changing Times And Priorities

There is a dialogue of Chiranjeevi in the film 'Tagore'. “A person joins both his hands in deference only to a doctor as he is the only one who can give and save lives.”

That is the kind of respect, the men of medicine command in our society. Or used to. Hospitals were always seen as places that put service above profit. And from this noble motive sprang the respect towards those associated with the profession.

Hence, the news of the IT raids on Apollo Group of Hospitals aptly reflects the changed priorities for even the medical profession.

Hospitals like education are now a lucrative business where profit reigns supreme. And when profit takes precedence over service, quality tends to slip along with respect for those involved in the profession.

Do we not see increased cases of relatives indulging in acts of vandalism and assault against hospitals after negligent treatment results in the death of their loved ones? The IT raids only emphasize the changed priorities in an ever-changing world.
