A Really Strange Decision

A Really Strange Decision

Nirmala Seetharaman once again stated categorically that Apple will not be allowed to sell second hand refurbished phones in India.

The Department of Electronics and Information Technology has told the environment ministry and the Director General of Foreign Trade that it does not support the import of second-hand consumer products because it contributes to electronic waste being dumped in India, officials said and now Nirmala Seetharaman has upheld the same stance. This is really a strange argument.

How can second hand phones refurbished contribute to e-waste and first hand phones not do so? It is everyone's dream to own an iphone first hand or second hand and the ultimate choice should be left to the consumer.

The government will anyway be getting revenue in the form of taxation and Apple has also declared that it would be following the same quality control procedures for all range of its phones, first hand or second hand.

If Apple sells second hand phones, then the other manufactures will be badly hit and this could be the actual reason. But then, they should come out with something innovative to stay in the reckoning for this is a free market. Mentioning reasons such as e-waste is just a farce.
