409 Farmers' Suicides: Not A Big Figure?

A large number of farmers have been committing suicides in Telangana for the last one year due to mounting debts and crop failures.

Yet, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government did not react much; instead, it always tried to play down the suicides and sought to blame it on the previous Congress and the Telugu Desam Party governments.

And now, the TRS government is finding fault with the Opposition parties for exaggerating the figures of farmers’ suicides, instead of admitting its failures to prevent such extreme steps.

On Wednesday, Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy slammed the Opposition leaders for projecting wrong figures of some 1,000 suicides by the farmers.

“Only 409 farmers committed suicide after the formation of Telangana State. They were all because of the faulty policies of the TDP and the Congress governments,” he said.

Ironically, he also blamed the “Andhra” officials for the suicides. He said some Andhra officials working in the banks in the Telangana region for forcibly collecting interests against norms from farmers for crop loans.

“On getting information, we will pay back the same amount to the farmers”, he said.

The minister seems to have forgotten that even if one farmer commits suicide, it is a disgrace to the government. Instead of throwing blame on the rival parties, it is time he concentrated more on redressing the farmers’ grievances.
