Life Style: 'Laya likes wearing silk sarees'

It could not have been a better choice as Telugu actress Laya launched the Hyderabad chapter of the Silk Mark Scheme at Taj Krishna on Wednesday.

“I like wearing silk sarees,” smiled the Nandi Award winner before complementing the scheme, initiated by the Silk Mark Organisation of India. “It’s advantageous for all of us.”

But conspicuous by its absence was the silk saree, which could have been a better option than the red salwar kameez that the actress preferred to wear. But then it was not deliberate as Laya herself explained she had a flight to catch to Chennai.

The Preminchu girl left the inauguration function in a jiffy. But not before obliging a pool of lensmen, who framed every moment of hers. Laya certainly made her presence felt in launching ceremony of Silk Mark, introduced to safeguard the interests of both consumers as well as manufacturers.

Launched for the first time in Bangalore in 2004, Silk Mark is a quality symbol provided to the manufacturers guaranteeing purity.

“It is a market-oriented approach. Those interested can join voluntarily and become members of this scheme,” said H Bhaskar, chairman of Silk Mark Organisation of India and CEO, Silk Board.

After becoming a member, dealers are entitled to display Silk Mark logos in their products. Silk Mark will cover fabrics, sarees, readymade garments and carpets.

Besides eight permanent members who are representatives of the government of India, Central Silk Board, IEPC and state government agencies, there are special, ordinary and associate members.

While the special, ordinary and associate members are required to pay membership fees, the permanent ones are exempted. An annual renewal fees also has to be paid depending on the turnover.

Justice I Venkatanarayana, president of the Andhra Pradesh State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, T Satyanarayana Rao, Commissioner of Handloom and Textile and Vandana Kumar, CEO of Silk Mark and C S Ramalaksmi, Commissioner of Sericulture were present for the occasion.
