Behind The Scene: The story behind YSR's US trip!
There appears to be much more to Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy's trip to the United States of America than what meets the eye, if one were to believe the sources in the CMO.
According to these sources, the Chief Minister's visit to the US is not official, but purely a private visit. The World Agriculture Forum, which has invited the Chief Minister for its meeting, is not an official organisation of any government, but is only an NGO, which is working for the interest of multinational companies in the US. One of the main funders for this Forum is multinational seed company Monsanto, which was facing a bitter resistance in Andhra Pradesh for its genetically modified crops like Bt Cotton. Having failed to take on the officials in the State agricultural department, Monsanto is learnt to have gone otherway round to trap the Chief Minister, by inviting him to the World Agriculture Forum meeting at St Louis, which is incidentally the headquarters of Monsanto. And YSR, having passion to project himself as a pro-farmer Chief Minister, thought it would give a boost to his pro-farmer image and went to the US.
Interestingly, the Chief Minister was not an official invitee to the meeting either. He went there as a participant by paying 5,000 dollars as fee, along with his delegation. What he would achieve from the meeting is anybody's guess. He is expected to succumb to the pressure tactics of the multinational seed companies, that would be detrimental to the interest of local farmers!
