Behind The Scene: Kavuri plays key role in Cabinet expansion?
Elluru Lok Sabha member Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, who desperately tried to get into the Union Cabinet last year, is a happy man now. For, the Congress high command has honoured his recommendations in the Cabinet expansion in Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy is understood to have accommodated Maganti Babu from West Godavari only at the recommendation of Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, which was okayed by the high command. Otherwise, the chance would have gone to Vatti Vasanth Kumar, a staunch loyalist of the Chief Minister. Babu happens to be a close follower of Kavuri.
Kavuri reportedly convinced the high command that it was essential to accommodate a "Kamma" from West Godvari in the Cabinet, since it would balance the caste equations in the coastal Andhra. Already, Daggubati Purandareshwari from Guntur and Renuka Chowdary from Khammam, who also hails from the same community, had been taken into the Union Cabinet. This would wean away the dominant Kammas from going back to the Telugu Desam. Similarly, Kavuri also prevailed upon including Galla Aruna, rather than Kiran Kumar Reddy, from Chittoor district in the State Cabinet for a similar reason. The high command has weighed the options between Gali Muddu Krishnama Naidu and Galla Aruna, but finally went by the recommendations of Kavuri.
