Behind The Scene: TD gains in Council polls!
The internal wranglings in the Congress party helped the Telugu Desam bag the Legislative Council seats in several places.
The most important victory was in Nellore, where the controversy over open ballot by several Congress voters including Nedurumalli Rajyalakshmi erupted. The party's official candidate and PCC vice president C V Sesha Reddy, said to be a close follower of Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy lost the elections. Party rebel Bommireddy Raghavendra Reddy had won the electionwith a comfortable margin of 47 votes with the support of TDP and CPM.
Followers of CV Sesha Reddy strongly suspect the role of the party leaders in Surveypalli, Udayagiri and Atmakur behind the humiliating defeat of PCC vice president. Incidentally Congress legislators in the district represent 10 out of 11 constituencies and his victory should have been a simple task since the party had clear lead of over 114 votes in the local bodies. Though Anam group had strongly objected for his candidature before the CM, they fell in line after he directed them to ensure his victory. However, the group reportedly backstabbed Sesha Reddy by encouraging cross voting.
In Karimnagar, too, TDP candidate Chennadi Sudhakar Rao emerged triumphant from the Karimnagar local authorities constituency in the council election by defeating the
Congress candidate Chalmeda Lakshmi Narasimha Rao with a margin of 26 votes. The voting trend clearly revealed large-scale cross voting. In spite of having the highest number of 407 local body elected representatives in its kitty, the Congress could not win the MLC seat from Karimnagar local authorities constituency. The CPI and the MIM, which have total strength of 28 members together, extended support to the Congress contestant. On the other hand, the TDP having 388 members in its fold managed to win the election. The TRS contestant could not secure even a double-digit figure despite of the fact that it has 95 elected representatives in the local bodies in the district.
Similar crossvoting was reported in East and West Godvari districts, where the TD candidates won one seat each in both the districts.
