The Telugu Desam Party does not seem to be learning any lesson from its strategic mistakes. Instead, it is trying to find lame excuses to defend itself and claim that it still has people’s support.
On Saturday, when an engineering student Ishan committed suicide for Telangana state formation and seeking declaration of certain TDP leaders as traitors of Telangana, TDP legislator Errabelli Dayakar Rao felt offended. He suspected that there was something fishy about the suicide and the suicide note (indirectly suspectign the role of Telangana Rashtra Samithi in the death), and demanded that there should be a thorough inquiry into the death. He wondered why the Telangana activists were targetting only the TDP, while sparing the Congress, though the TDP was sincerely fighting for Telangana state. “I feel the suicide is part of the conspiracy to defame the TDP,” he said.
Within an hour, the Telangana activists attacked his house in Warangal and ransacked it, demanding an apology from Errabelli for looking down upon the sacrifice made by Ishan. There was tension and the police had to use force to disperse the mob.
Why should Errabelli react so strongly? The suicide note also mentions the name of Congress leaders like DS, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Gutta Sukhender Reddy, Jana Reddy, R Damodar Reddy and D Sridhar Babu. None of these Congress leaders made any comment, because it is a sensitive issue. With Errabelli’s reaction, the party would suffer further damage in Telangana region, if at all it has any base.
