The young and dynamic opposition leader of Andhra Pradesh for the first time ever for any politician of his stature from the Telugu states is conversing LIVE with worldwide Telugu NRIs to motivate and directly pitch for their support to his continuing fight of achieving the special status for Andhra Pradesh as promised by the central govt.
Special Category Status (SGS) for Andhra Pradesh is the solemn promise given, on the floors of our parliament, by the then Prime Minister and fully supported and endorsed by the leadership of the current ruling party, the BJP.
The idea of granting ‘special status’ to the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh is ingrained in the fact that the sudden bifurcation of the state without a due course, plunged the state into an economical quagmire, with a gaping budgetary shortfall of over Rs 12,000/- crores or more annually, lacking proper infrastructure and even a capital city.
This imbalance and injustice could only be corrected by granting special status for a period of 10 years to provide impetus for growth and sustainability of Andhra Pradesh.
That is what was promised by the central govt and their coalition partner, present ruling party of the state and we are rightfully asking for what was promised to us.
The Special Category Status for Andhra Pradesh also assumes a greater significance as Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill approved by Parliament, will become effective from 2017. Cash strapped AP cannot offer any attractive tax incentives to companies in the wake of GST and this only intensifies the need for special status to Andhra Pradesh, to propel its engines of economic growth.
