Opinion: Turning a setback into an opportunity

These days, whichever Telugu news daily you happen to read, barring ‘Sakshi’, which is owned by Jagan, the general impression conveyed by the coverage of the ‘Hudhud relief activities’ is that but for Chandrababu Naidu and his team, the people of Vizag would have had no hope of recovery at all.

In fact, the timing of ‘Hudhud’ couldn’t’ have been better for Chandrababu Naidu. His ‘loan waiver’ to farmers and controversial ‘land pooling’ decisions  along with  going ahead with Kamma-dominated Vijayawada as the ‘Capital’ even though the Sivaramakrishnan Committee was against it, have all put him on the back foot.

Against this backdrop, the announcement of the worst cyclone in decades would have sent shivers down the spine of any administrator.

But Chandrababu by giving a lot of coverage and publicity to the relief activities has had himself portrayed as a ‘messiah’ of Vizag by ‘Eenadu’ and ‘Andhra Jyothi’ in particular.

In the process, he also got the entire Telugu film industry dominated by his community yet gain, to come out with statements praising his work.

Pawan Kalyan as usual was in full form with his (Bha) Jana Sena praising Chandrababu Naidu.

Naidu also got Modi on location along with Venkayya Naidu, another from the Kamma Community to laud him in front of the ‘National Media’.

The vernacular media has now made ‘Naidu’ a hero in the eyes of the public.

Manipulation or public conditioning has been done in such a fashion that his shortcomings in other departments would not be questioned for some time to come.

And interestingly, Naidu estimates the losses at around Rs 70000 core. Only God knows what made Naidu come up with that figure!

Apart from losing its green cover, how exactly has Vizag suffered apart from the damage to its infrastructure? The daily and basic necessities of life are being restored to the people slowly. Electricity, transportation, food etc.

One does not expect Modi to fall into the trap of Chandrababu and sanction the quoted amount. But if he does, there is absolutely no doubt that 90% of the money would go elsewhere and Vizag would be lucky to get even the remaining 10%.

Any attempts by Chandrababu to turn ‘Hudhud’ into a ‘cash bonanza’ should be strictly dealt with.
