Important Update on OPT Stem Extension

Important Update on 36 months OPT Stem Extension.

On March 11th, 2016 USCIS announced that STEM OPT extension would be extended from 17 months to 24 months. Many OPT students rejoiced this announcement.

It has been a tough year for OPT students. With the advent of Indian Implementation Partners for every software project, OPT student resumes are being rejected outright by vendors who are asking for OPT card, Passport and Drivers Licenses copies to determine date of birth and visa status of the applicant and rejecting OPT students. Consultancies are helpless in this matter because OPT’s are not covered by Equal Opportunity Act.

The stem extension from 17months to 24 months was like a life line to many OPT students who did not make it in the H1-B lottery. Form I-983 came as a rude shock to many of these students. Every employer who hires an OPT student or continues the employment of a OPT student has to sign the I-983 form stating that they have a training plan available to mentor OPT students.

Most employers are refusing to sign the I-983 form which is required to be endorsed by DSO to file OPT stem extension because they do not have a training plan to mentor OPT students.

We request OPT students whose employers refuse to sign I-983 forms to send their resumes to [email protected] or call us at (813) 944-0216.

We have a comprehensive training plan and performance evaluation process in place and are able to hire Stem OPT students.
