Manmohan: Do not to politicise the Babli dam issue
New Delhi (PTI): As opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) accused him of siding with Maharashtra on the Babli dam issue, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked political parties not to politicise the matter and work for an amicable resolution.
"River waters are a national resource and all political parties must work together to ensure equitable utilisation of this national resource," Singh told a delegation of MPs and MLAs from Andhra Pradesh led by TDP leader, N Chandrababu Naidu.
After leading a delegation to the Prime Minister, the TDP leader alleged that the Prime Minister appeared to be siding with Maharashtra.
"He (Singh) said he needed more time. We have been agitating for the last two years. Instead of trying to solve the issue, he told us not to politicise the matter.
"We have been agitating for the last two years. Maharashtra was not implementing the award of the Godavari Water Tribunal and directives of the Central Minister. If he (PM) cannot stop the construction, then he doesn't have the right to continue in power," Naidu said addressing about 1,500 party activists and leaders at Jantar Mantar here.
Observing that the matter was at present before courts, Singh assured the delegation that the Centre would ensure that justice was done to both Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The Prime Minister asked the leaders of all political parties not to create tension and instead create an atmosphere in which contentious issues were resolved amicably to the satisfaction of all sides.
